Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about running your group on Group Lending. Can't find it? Reach out — we're happy to help.

Getting started

Do I need a bank account or an ID to use this?
No. You register with just your phone number and a one-time SMS code. There is no email, no paperwork, and no identity documents to upload — your group vouches for its members.
How do we start a group?
One person creates the group, chooses whether it is social or savings, and invites others by phone number or a shareable link. A savings group then picks a chama or a merry-go-round model.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The app is installable and keeps working without a connection. The treasurer can record cash payments offline, and everything syncs safely once you are back online — without ever double-posting.

Money & payments

How does money move?
Contributions and loan repayments can be collected with an M-Pesa prompt, and payouts can be sent straight to members. When mobile money is not used, the treasurer records cash or a transfer by hand.
How is loan interest calculated?
Your group chooses. A flat rate is simple and predictable; a reducing-balance rate charges interest only on what is still owed, which is fairer to the borrower.
What is a share-out?
At the end of a chama cycle the pool is distributed. By default each member receives their contributions back plus a share of the interest earned, proportional to what they put in. Groups can also choose an equal split.

Groups & roles

What is the difference between a chama and a merry-go-round?
A chama pools money and lends it back to members with interest, sharing the profit at the end of a cycle. A merry-go-round pools a fixed amount each cycle and pays the whole pot to one member at a time, rotating until everyone has had a turn.
Who approves loans?
It is configurable per group. Loans can be approved by an officer such as the treasurer, or put to a vote of the members — whichever your group agrees on.
Can we elect officials?
Yes. Non-social groups can run elections for chairperson, treasurer, and secretary, with open voting and a fair tie-break. Roles are resolved from the current vote, so leadership changes cleanly each term.
What happens if someone wants to leave?
By default a member must settle any outstanding loans before exiting, and savings are returned at cycle close rather than immediately, so the pool is never drained mid-cycle.

Trust & security

Can the records be edited or deleted?
No. The ledger is append-only: entries are inserted, never changed or removed. A correction is a new, visible entry that references the original, so the full history always stays intact and auditable.
Will financial institutions see our private transactions?
No. Advertisers only ever see very general information such as group type and region. Individual transaction details are never shared or sold, and advertising has no access to your financial records.

Cost

Is it really free?
Yes — free for groups, with no fees on your savings or transactions. We are funded by financial institutions advertising responsibly to our community, which keeps the product free for you.
