Terms that keep your group protected.
These Terms govern your use of Chama. Groups self-govern; the platform records and enforces the rules each group sets, keeps an append-only ledger, and is free for groups.
Eligibility & accounts
You must be at least 18 years old and register with a valid phone number to create or join a group. One person may belong to multiple groups. You are responsible for keeping your credentials safe and for every action taken under your account.
Groups govern themselves
Chama is a free tool. The rules of a group — contribution amounts, cycles, loan terms, and how decisions are made — are set by the group, not by us. We provide the records; the group provides the agreements.
The ledger
All money recorded on Chama is tracked in an append-only ledger. Entries are added when a contribution, loan, or repayment is confirmed and are never deleted. If something must be corrected, a new adjustment entry is recorded so the history stays complete.
Money movement
Contributions and payouts move through mobile money (M-Pesa) where available, or are recorded manually and confirmed by a group reviewer. A recorded declaration is not money until it is verified.
Advertising
Chama is free for groups because financial institutions may show relevant, clearly labelled offers. Your financial activity is never sold. See the Privacy Policy for how advertising uses your data.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use Chama for unlawful activity;
- misrepresent contributions, loans, or identities;
- interfere with the service or other groups;
- attempt to access accounts or data you are not a member of.
Liability
Chama provides record-keeping and coordination tooling. It is not a bank, a lender, or a guarantor of any group agreement. Disputes between members are resolved within the group according to the group's own rules.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Kenya. If any provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
